A Tenderfoot Bride: Tales from an Old Ranch
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Nebraska Pr (October, 1988)
Author: Clarice E. Richards
Average review score:

Eastern Lady Goes West
What a wonderful look at the 1900's wild west in Elbert county Colorado.

She was the brid of a minister and these two cultured souls moved west. They witnessed the ebb tide of the wild lawless days.

This book was first published in 1920 and was praised then for its charm and accuracy. Both qualities are still quite evident today.

Vermont Lady goes West
Clarice Richased went as a bride to a ranch on the high plains of Colorado. She set herself to become a good ranch wise. She writes with a great deal of insight and humor during her coming of age and the passing of an era - the old wild west.

Alaska Trees and Shrubs
Published in Paperback by Univ of Alaska Pr (December, 1986)
Authors: Leslie A. Viereck and Elbert L., Jr. Little
Average review score:

A wonderful reference
This book contains a tremendous amount of information. Most of this book comprises detailed descriptions of each tree and shrub that grows in Alaska. Each write-up includes a physical description of the plant (including description of various seasonal forms), description of uses of the plant by humans and wild animals, description of the plant's range (which is illustrated on a range map for each taxon); and the names of closely-related plants. And every write-up is accompanied by an excellent, detailed black-and-white illustration of parts of the plant (most are drawn actual size). Given all of this information, I had no trouble identifying most of the trees and shrubs that I have encountered in Alaska. And I am no botanist.

Includes an introduction generally describing the vegetation zones of Alaska, and a key to identifying trees based mainly upon characteristics of their leaves. This reference is still cited in the academic literature today; and although it lacks color photographs (and plants are organized taxonomically rather than by color or other feature) I believe it would be an excellent reference for the non-expert who is interested in learning about the trees and shrubs of the arctic and sub-arctic Alaskan environments. Highly recommended!

The American Vitruvius: An Architects' Handbook of Civic Art (Reprint Series)
Published in Hardcover by Princeton Architectural Press (January, 1996)
Authors: Werner Hedgemann, Elbert Peets, and Werner Hegemann
Average review score:

The Art of Designing Cities
This is an incredible achievement. It absolutely must be in the library of every architect and architecture student in the world, because we have lost contact with the beauty and social glory of living urbanistically. The architecture we produce supports this suburbanized lifestyle, and the anti social results of this new pattern of living can be seen daily on the news in all manner of bizarre murders and cultist activity. Well then! Without advocating a style of architecture in particular, this book advocates a type of planning that, if we are intelligent enough to understand this book, could save this country, and save the world. I do not exaggerate. Buy the book. You'll be a different person for having purchased it.

Birdwatching with Bubba

"A humorous gonzo style of bird watchers guide to Belize" SAN PEDRO SUN

Bubba and I set out to write this book about birds almost 10 years ago. I was a school teacher in the United States at a local collage in Memphis, married and living in midtown near the campus. My wife and I didn't have children, and I thought a dog would be good for our waning relationship. Of course it wasn't, and I wound up with the dog. He did turn out to be a rather smart dog, and, of course, we are the best of friends. He seems to think I had a midlife crises. I tell myself I just got bored, and either way I ended up here, no wife and talking to a confused birddog that thinks ornithology is his calling.

I've made this book as a collection the stories we published in the local newspaper. The stories, 120 total, are printed here as they were published in our "Bird Of The Week" column for the SAN PEDRO SUN.

Belize is not a large country, about the size of Maine, but it has the most varied habitats within its borders you will ever find. These rich habitats support a variety of exotic avifauna that has not yet been accurately numbered. Those who try and count them such as The Belize Audubon Society, come up with figures like 530 species.

The names of the locations are real, and right where the book says they are. It's not a guidebook but if you wish to read it as such, I used all the bars and bartenders' correct names so you won't get lost. We tried to make all the bird information as accurate as possible, but that's not at all what "BIRD WATCHING WITH BUBBA" is about, as you will see.

Food for the Soul
This book as well as The Notebook of Elbert Hubbard, are my 2 favorite books in my entire library. They contain the inspired and inspiring selections of Elbert, gathered during a lifetime of discriminating reading for his own use. They contain mottoes, epigrams, short essays, passages, and orphic sayings. They are coined from a life of love, laughter and work by a man who achieved greatly in literature, art, philosophy, business, and life. I highly recommend it to anyone who is fascinated with the human spirit
